Becoming Helen Keller – Currently in Production
Becoming Helen Keller is a 90-minute television documentary biography to be launched nationally on PBS in 2010. A cross platform project, it will explore the life and legacy of one of the world’s first international celebrities. While many people believe they know the story of the deaf and blind child, the full story of her remarkable life has yet to be told. A college graduate, vaudeville and silver screen performer, author and activist, Keller used her fame and influence to draw attention to the needs of the disabled and downtrodden around the world. Helen Keller’s long life also provides a window through which we can examine how social change for people with disabilities developed over the course of the 20th century. The broadcast will be accompanied by an online exhibit, a searchable database, and a number of educational products. Major funding: National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional funding: NEC Foundation of America, Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation, the Irving and Sara Selis Foundation, Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities and Alabama Foundation for the Humanities.
